This project is birthed out of the rise in mental health related illnesses especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Recent statistics reveal a 90% increase in substance induced disorder, depression, anxiety and suicide ideation. About 80% of individuals affected by mental health disorders are male(Chainama Hills,2021). This project will increase awareness on mental health, help improve access to mental health services and reduce stigma against mental health. The target group is male aged 18-65.
Mental health in Zambia is generally "not" accepted. This is due to social and cultural norms. This has increased stigma against persons living with Mental Health disorders, little awareness of mental health and scarce mental health services in Zambia. The stigma has led to poor access to mental health services and decreased productivity especially among young men of the group 18-45.
Hands of Mercy will solve the problem by providing free access to mental health services in Zambia. Currently accessing mental health services is very costly and is only believed to be for the "elite". Free access to mental health services will mean improved mental health state and increased productivity.
This will improve individual's mental health through increased awareness of self; help individuals understand the importance of accessing mental health services, create safe spaces on conversations on Mental Health and overall improve the productivity on individuals through an improved mental health.
