PROJECT REPORT: WOMEN EMPOWERMENT PROJECT
Theme: Empower a Woman
Location: Gaba, Makindye Division, Kampala, Uganda
Reporting Period: January - October 2026

1. Project Summary

The Women Empowerment Project under the theme "Empower a Woman" was implemented to support vulnerable women in our community program. The project aimed to improve household income and savings culture through skills training and group savings.

2. Background and Problem

In Gaba fishing community, many women are single mothers with unstable income. Most depend on small casual jobs. This leads to inability to afford basic household needs and medical care. The project was initiated to break this cycle by empowering women economically.

3. Project Objectives

1. To equip vulnerable women with practical skills for income generation
2. To promote a savings culture through formation of Village Savings Groups
3. To improve household welfare through empowered women
4. To build peer support among women in the community

4. Activities Carried Out

1. Identification and registration of vulnerable women in Gaba
2. Conducted training sessions on savings, financial literacy, and small business management
3. Conducted hands-on trainings in tailoring and making reusable sanitary pads
4. Formed savings group with weekly meetings and contributions
5. Provided mentorship and psychosocial support during group meetings
6. Conducted home visits to monitor progress and family welfare
7. Held community dialogue on women empowerment

5. Achievements and Results

1. Active participation of vulnerable women in the project
2. Functional savings group formed with regular weekly savings
3. Group savings accumulated and members able to borrow for emergencies
4. Several women started small income-generating activities including selling vegetables, second-hand clothes, and liquid soap
5. Some women now able to make reusable pads for sale, earning small income
6. Increased confidence and peer support among women
7. Improved household stability among participating families

6. Community Feedback

- "Before I was not saving, now I can save and borrow when I have an emergency." - Beneficiary
- "The training in tailoring has helped me. I can now mend clothes for neighbors and get some money." - Beneficiary
- Local Council leader in Gaba commended the project for reducing stress and improving welfare in participating households.

7. Challenges Faced

1. Limited start-up capital for women to expand their small businesses
2. High cost of tailoring materials and machines - few sewing machines shared among many women
3. Some women missed sessions due to casual work demands
4. Limited funding to reach more women in need

8. Lessons Learned

1. When a woman is empowered economically, her household directly benefits
2. Group savings builds discipline and unity more than individual support
3. Practical skills like tailoring and pad-making are highly valued because they bring immediate small income

9. Next Steps / Recommendations

1. Provide small start-up kits and capital for women who completed training
2. Purchase additional sewing machines to reduce waiting time
3. Expand the project to reach more vulnerable women in the next 6 months
4. Link women to local markets and community services
5. Continue weekly mentorship and savings meetings

10. Conclusion

The project themed "Empower a Woman" has shown that empowering women is a direct way to strengthen families and the community. With continued support, we can sustain and expand the impact to more families in Gaba.

We thank all supporters, volunteers, and community leaders who made this project possible.
