By Celia Russell | Trustee, Tekkatho Foundation
One year on from the earthquake in central Myanmar, your generosity has enabled Tekkatho to deliver targeted, locally led relief where it was most urgently needed. We distributed equal emergency grants to three trusted partners: a monastery school near the epicentre in Mingun, a network of Buddhist nuns in Sagaing, and the Myanmar YMCA in Mandalay. These frontline organisations were able to act quickly despite extremely challenging conditions, reaching communities that had little or no access to formal aid.
At the monastery school in Mingun, your support reached at least 130 households with essential food and cash, and provided funding to five religious schools sheltering displaced families. This immediate assistance was complemented by the purchase of medicines, clean water, and supplies to respond to emerging health risks.
In Sagaing, the nuns focused on the most vulnerable, delivering practical household kits directly to injured and isolated families who could not travel to aid distribution points. As one recipient shared, “We had nothing left and nothing to cook… this package is so precious.” The nuns also used funds to construct 12 durable bamboo shelters, see photo below, offering safer, longer-term protection for families facing ongoing aftershocks and severe weather. Across both areas, your donations not only met urgent needs but also helped restore dignity, safety, and a foundation for recovery.
Looking ahead, we are now rebuilding a school to replace one lost in the earthquake in a new and safer location. I am very happy to tell you that it opened this week with 200 primary school children already enrolled.
Thank you again for your compassion and generosity. Your continued support will help us reach even more communities as they rebuild their lives on year on.
