By Kate Robey | The Charitable Trust Operations Manager

Meg is off to Asia!
Meg is off to Asia!

Dear Supporter,

Here are the profiles of two of the candidates from East Gippsland Shire Council who are going to Asia.

Meg:

As an active member of the community, Meg volunteers with Mallacoota Aged Care Inc, Mallacoota Pony Club, Save Bastion Point group and many other small community groups. With a keen interest in interest in global issues and religions of the world, she is studying International Studies at Deakin, majoring in International Relations.

Meg is excited about the amazing opportunity to experience Asia and hopes to discover more about our neighbouring nations, gain perspective on relationships with Australia and immerse herself in another culture.

“It is absolutely an amazing once in a lifetime experience. Not only will this experience assist my studies, I am also excited to be able to experience a completely different culture. Every time I travel I learn more about myself and the world, and I feel as though volunteering for an extended period of time will teach me three times as much!” said Meg.

Meg wants to act as an ambassador for other young people in regional and rural areas to ensure that councils continue to invest in opportunities that provide promote the benefits of global citizenship as well as the importance of engaging with our Asia neighbours.

“Many young people within East Gippsland are not exposed to a very large range of people, cultures and nationalities. In the years to come, the influence of Asian countries over the geo-political sphere will mean that Australia's involvement with Asian nations will only grow. By having young Australians experience Asian culture it will further develop understanding of our closest neighbours.”

“When I return home from the volunteering placement I hope to be able to share my experiences and promote the benefits of volunteering overseas to other young people in our community.”

Tammy

Tammy has always had a passion for social justice, the environment and community development. As a Faith and Ministry Captain at Nagle College she assisted in organising the school’s Homeless Sleep-out, is an active member of the Nagle College Youth Group and volunteers with Eagle Point Landcare.

With a goal to work in the United Nations or Non-Government Organisation assisting in the social and economic development of countries, Tammy is very grateful to the East Gippsland Shire Council for the opportunity to experience Asia, the culture of our region and to make a difference.

“This is a phenomenal opportunity to learn about another country in many ways, like their health and education system, culture and physical environment,” said Tammy. “I have always had a passion for fighting injustices in our world and obtaining a better understanding of the world outside of our community and I believe this is an opportunity for me make a difference in a big way.”

Tammy is looking forward to immersing herself in a different culture, making lifelong friendships and sharing her experience with her peers upon her return to East Gippsland: “I can bring back my experiences and share the things I have learnt, whilst also urging other young people to contribute within their community but also consider undertaking one of the many immersion opportunities offered to them.”

Thank you for your continued support of the National Scholarship Program, Australia. Without you opportunities like these wouldn't be available to these young scholars.

Best Wishes,

The Charitable Trust
