Dear Friends,
We are back again sharing you some wonderful news about the great work that our staff are doing in the remote areas. Thanks to your support, our health workers are back to work providing primary healthcare services in Karnali during and after COVID-19 pandemic whose risk is still not subsided.
In this report, we would like to tell you the story of a little girl called Sushma (name changed), who has benefited tremendously from our PHASE Nepal health services. Sushma is just 26 months old, and she lives with her parents and several siblings in a family that is dependent on agricultural activities to make their ends meet.
As you can imagine, life is incredibly tough for families in Karnali region like Sushma's, and providing nutritious food for everyone is a constant struggle. Unfortunately, this had serious impact on little Sushma's health which was quickly identified by PHASE Nepal health workers during a home visit.
Thanks to the support of people like you, we were able to provide Sushma and her family with the PHASE nutrition package. This package includes essential food items like rice, wheat, soybeans, and local ghee, which are carefully chosen to provide the maximum nutrition possible.
In addition, Sushma's mother was given guidance on how to prepare a special multi-grain flour that is high in micronutrients and easy to feed the baby. The process involves roasting different types of grains separately and grinding them together to create a flour that is rich in micronutrients and easy to digest for babies. The flour can be kept in an airtight container. The mother was instructed to mix the flour with water in a clean bowl to create a paste and feed it to her baby, Sushma, multiple times throughout the day.
With regular follow-up and guidance, Sushma's health began to improve, and her mother was also selected for our PHASE farmer's group, where she received training on vegetable farming and how to produce and feed chickens for good yield.
With all these efforts, we are thrilled to report that Sushma's health has improved tremendously. Her mid-arm circumference has increased from 11 to 13.5 cm, her weight from 6.5 to 11kg, and her height from 11cm to 78cm in a few weeks. We cannot overstate how incredible this progress is, and we are so grateful for your continued support that has made it all possible.
Shusma’s mom shares,“We work very hard to provide for our family. Though, the food is never enough due to which my child was lean and unhealthy.
We did not know that our child was malnourished until the PHASE sisters checked her. I thought she would get healthy as she grew up.
They taught me to prepare special food for my baby with the local grains and feed them frequently. With their continuous support I have learned with practical knowledge, eventually my baby has been gaining weight and health. Thank you very much PHASE Nepal, you have become a divine in this place.”
PHASE Nepal team expresses its sincere thanks to all the donors for enabling us to continue providing essential health services to those who need it most. Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of people like Sushma and her family.
Best regards,
Team PHASE Nepal
