We wish to buy 12 desks and chairs for the educators at St. Ignatius Primary School in rural South Africa. The K - 7 school educates 550 children, and the teachers are using tabletops or children's desks for their workspaces, which does not allow them the benefits of storage and security. We just renovated all the classrooms at this school, and we are now looking to provide the educators with the furniture they deserve.
The problem is that the educators do not have the proper desks and chairs to do their jobs well. The current system demands that they have all their papers and books stacked on a child's desk or on an inadequate table top. The teachers do not have the space to maintain the privacy of children's work, because the papers have to remain on a tabletop for others' eyes. The classrooms also look more cluttered because of the lack of lockable storage space.
The lockable desks and new chairs will allow the educators to have a professional workspace. They will be able to store their children's private work in folders in lockable drawers, and they we also be able to hold private other important documents, such as communication with the principal, the Department of Education, parents, and colleagues.
Beyond all the logistical benefits, we believe the biggest long-term boost will be that educators and their students will feel more respected, more valued, and more dignified. This project goes well beyond comfort and aesthetics; it extends to sending a message that a teacher's work is valued and central to creating a more empowered and independent future for those who reap the perks of quality education. In short, these teachers deserve better.
