Dokodemo Pride Caravan Event Report

By Megumi Takai | Fundraising coordinator

Dokodemo Pride Caravan Event!
Dokodemo Pride Caravan Event!

We would like to give you a report about our nineth ‘Dokodemo’ (meaning ‘anywhere’ in Japanese) Pride Caravan event that we held at the Rightpia21 Manabi Café located in the Minoh Municipal Central Kayano Culture of Human Rights Center in Minoh City, on February 25th, 2024!

‘Dokodemo’ Pride Caravan is an outreach program of Pride Center Osaka. We aim to bring the services available at our center to everywhere in Japan. Our ‘Dokodemo’ Pride Caravan, decorated in 6 rainbow colors will, travel across Japan to spread information regarding the social obstacles faced by the LGBTQ community and information regarding the Pride Center Osaka.  We visit community spaces such as cultural centers and universities in the Kansai region, sharing information with students, faculty, visitors, and the general public.  This time we visited the Rightpia21 Manabi Café in Minoh City.

We opened ‘Dokodemo’ Pride Center (on-site center) at the community center. We brought books and display racks that we have at the Pride Center for people to feel like they are visiting our Pride Center! The Pride Center staff joined as well and had some conversations with the visitors and introduced what Pride Center Osaka is working on.

During the event, participants of all ages were given time to read books from the Pride Caravan LGBTQ library, which has books in different languages. Pride Center Osaka staff held a brief lecture on sexual minorities in which they explained the meaning of “LGBTQ” and “coming out”. Participants were invited to visit the Manabi Café counter for drinks, such as coffee, and purchase locally made snacks from B-Mart before the film screening.

We began our film screening and seminar at 15:30 using the Manabi Cafe open space. This time, we watched a human rights awareness drama film, Birthday (2022). The film was made by the Hyogo Prefecture Human Rights Promotion Association mainly to raise awareness for the existence and concerns of sexual minorities. The movie centered a mother’s journey of recognition of gender diversity and acceptance of her transgender son, demonstrating how respect can lead to a society where everyone can be free to be themselves. Afterwards, we moved onto a discussion session to share ideas in groups. 15 people participated in the film screening.

This “Dokodemo” caravan event was held with Rightpia 21 and WakeWake charity market, although the market was cancelled due to the bad weather. We are very happy that we were invited to take part in the community’s effort to provide an opportunity to deepen participants understanding and think about sexual diversity, including LGBTQ matters, through various initiatives, such as the Cinema Cafe and linked discussion.

Thank you very much to the participants! The report of the ‘Dokodemo’ Pride Caravan was also broadcasted on the 75th episode of Eenchau radio (the podcast of Pride Center Osaka), so please give it a listen!

Further details of the next Dokodemo Pride Caravan will be available on the Pride Center Osaka website. Students, faculty members, staff and anyone in the community are welcome to participate in this event!
