By Kapil Joshi | Support Nisha Tamang Memorial Fund for Scholarship
Nisha was hardworking, sincere and committed to serving the poor and needy people. She had left an easy job of instructor in a medical college to work with PHASE Nepal in remote Sirdibas VDC, Gorkha district that was badly affected by the earthquake that hit Nepal in April 2015. On 8th August, 2016 Nisha was on duty accompanying a young mother named Preeti and her 5 day old baby. The women had serious postpartum infection and the baby had fever. Both were being airlifted to Kathmandu for further treatment. Three other family members of the lactating mother were also on board. Unfortunately the helicopter crashed in Nuwakot and all the passengers including Nisha died in the crash.
Before her death, Nisha had promised her younger brother, who will complete his schooling this year, that she would educate him in Kathmandu. She would have funded his education from the salary she was drawing from PHASE Nepal. Unfortunately Nisha's death has put her brother's further education at risk. Due to the importance Nisha gave to education, PHASE Nepal decided to set up a fund to honor her commitment, sincerity and importance to education. The fund will be utilized to educate under privileged and needy children from Nisha's home village or from the village in which worked. All of the staff at PHASE Nepal donated one day of salary towards setting up the fund which amounted to Nrs 260,305/ (US $ 2600). $650 has been raised from GlobalGiving and Virgin Money Giving in the UK has raised 1752 pounds. PHASE Nepal hopes to collect US$25,000/- which will enable under privileged children to gain education.
