The history of APAO
APAO Animal Sanctuary was founded in January 2010 when over 100 cats and 3 dogs were rescued from a local animal shelter that was known for keeping its animals in poor conditions. After several complaints were filed against the shelter a group of six animal activists went on a mission to find a plot of land where the animals could be rehoused. They managed to find a one with the proper zoning permits and immediately took action. They informed the City Council of Gavà (Barcelona), the municipal where the animals were currently being kept and then had only 48 hours to move all of the animals from their negligent conditions to their new home.
Over the next few years, hundreds of cases of abuse and neglect arrived at the door of APAO, and while many tears were shed there was an enormous sense of joy for all the tiny lives being saved. APAO Cat is now a functional and operative animal defense organization that devotes its efforts to improving and increasing the number of rescues carried out within the community and across the country. The founder lives on site and is able to offer 24 hour care to its animals.
APAO is located in Corbera de Llobregat (Barcelona), in a natural rural environment and currently houses approximately 170 cats. Depending on their individual needs they live in one of the six different areas:
Vicki’s Home is for those cats who live in a critical state of depression and sadness.
Felv Garden accommodates our cats with Feline leukemia virus.
Rural Geriatric is for our older cats with chronic health problems requiring daily medication.
Special Corner is for those with social issues and don’t interact well with others.
Adoption House accommodates our most sociable cats for which we hope to find homes for.
Common Garden is our largest area where the majority of our residents live.
We appreciate you taking the time to read our story and thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts for collaborating with us, without your help none of this would be possible.
