Dear Friends,
At Apao we’re preparing for another hot summer, but we can all breathe a sigh of relief as the local government has recently lifted its state of emergency due to drought.
The region of Catalunya here in Spain first declared a drought emergency in February 2024 and began imposing water restrictions such as limiting individual consumption. However, with the recent rainfall over the past few weeks, the region’s reservoirs have been replenished to 24% capacity, up from 14% just two months ago.
Not that the cats have noticed much difference but I’m sure they’ll be happy to have their water bowls filled daily with cold, fresh water this summer.
Did you know that a cat should drink approximately 60mls / kg per day. That means your average 4kg cat should drink about 1 cup of water a day, this will vary based on the type of food they eat (dry kibble or canned food).
Keeping hydrated is just as important for your cat’s health as it is for us humans. Here are some tips to help encourage your cat to drink more.
The right bowl – try a wider bowl to ensure their whiskers don’t touch the sides
Water fountain – cats love to drink running water
Fresh water – sitting water collects dust, dirt and other bits, replace water daily
Wet food – canned food or broth are a great way to increase overall water intake
We hope you and your furry friends all enjoy a safe and lovely summer!
