Nit's adoption

By Rebecca Chidley | Volunteer

After several years of volunteering at Apao I took the decision to adopt another cat. Nit (Catalan for night) had been brought to the shelter after being hit by a car and having her tail amputated. She was completely feral and spent the first few weeks in the infirmary, recovering from her injuries. Afterwards, she was moved to a quiet area of the sanctuary and over time, she developed into a quiet, sweet little cat. She enjoyed time alone, she would have favorite spots and be quite loyal taking naps in them. After a couple of years I started to see her health decline, her fur was not so lustrous as before, she was losing weight and was less energetic. I decided it was time to bring her home with me and take her to the Vet for proper care.

During her initial visit at the Vet we discovered she had renal insufficiency, so we were sent home with a special diet and supplements. It took about a week of adaptation before Tabata (my other adopted cat) and Nit were best friends. The loved each other… they played, groomed each other for hours, and were basically inseparable. It was the cutest most fulfilling thing to witness.

Over time, however, she began to develop megacolon which was a result of her spinal injury from the car accident. Frequent bouts of constipation meant several trips to the Vet to have it extracted. But she was just the sweetest cat and I wanted to do anything I possible could to help her and with some other methods we managed to get it under control.

Then suddenly it was apparent that Nit was quite unwell, I took her to the Vet and this time it was renal failure. She was hospitalized and after several days with a drip she stabilized enough for me to bring her home, however, we knew she didn’t have long left but at least she would be at home and receive all the love possible. She was home for about a week before I had to make the toughest decision of my life, my poor little Nit just couldn’t fight any longer and I couldn’t prolong her suffering.

I’m grateful for the time we had together and that I was able to provide her with a warm loving home for at least a short time. I loved to see her flourish and witness the love between her and Tabata. Adopting a senior cat is very rewarding, please consider it.
