The Blue Atlas Project has been working in the Bahamas since 2020, helping in the rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of the worst Hurricane to hit the Abaco’s and Grand Bahamas, Dorian.
Our mission is to help create sustainable food system solutions with communities in crisis. In other words, to utilize agriculture to provide food security and combat the climate crisis. In the Bahamas we established the first Food Equity and Sustainability Training (FEAST) Center. This was our pilot training center and school garden. It included an outdoor classroom, a 16’x32’ shade house, and both hydroponics and aquaponics garden demonstrations.
Over the past two years that has grown to five aquaponic school gardens, an aquaponic community garden, a permaculture school garden, and around $130k USD to farmers rebuilding after the storm. Through partnerships with experts, we hosted over a dozen trainings both in-person and virtual to reach 700+ individuals with climate smart agriculture lessons, from compost to aquaculture.
When we started this fund, we wanted to help prepare to respond to the next storm. Luckily, the Northern Caribbean has spared the worst of this season. What we have done, is continuing to build the fund and provide on-going assistance to the school gardens we got started by the end of 2022. We just shipped over supplies in September and have allocated seeds, shade clothes, replacement pumps among other things to school gardens across Abaco. We are prepping for another shipment of items for our SULA grantees and aquaponic partners.
Thank you so much for the support. Every little bit helps us reach our goal of increasing food security, through education and resources in the Bahamas.
