Our SULA Fund will allow farmers to scale up to commercial production capacity. 3. Build a climate smart ag training center

Challenge

Currently, CARICOM estimates that there are 34 million people in the region suffering from hunger due to food insecurity. Island nations present unique challenges. In agriculture, these challenges present as scarcity of land limited access to fresh water and nutrient poor soil. Coupled with growing hurricane seasons and lack of access to funding for farmers and ag related businesses it is vital to fill this niche.

Solution

By: 1. Actively increase local food production by providing training on grow systems and climate smart ag technologies. 2. Working with the community to stimulate the conversation around food security through outreach, trainings on nutrition and youth engagement 3. Working our SULA Grant and SULA Fund to encourage and assist food and farm workers to reach capacity through mentorship, grants, and investments for the purpose of increasing the number small shareholder farms and commercial product

Long-Term Impact

The long term impact of increasing food security by supporting a thriving local food system is: 1. Decreased vulnerable reliance on nutrient poor, expensive imports 2. Farm and Food industry growth 3. Increased GDP through keeping more dollars circulating within the economy Local food systems are the cornerstone of a thriving local economy and access to more nutrient dense food. Eating locally creates a more balanced diet increasing overall health and combating malnutrition.
