Cosma invests empowerment in people through formal education And vocational training. Cosma provides. ~80% of total project budget to give scholarships to the children of families experiencing extreme poverty and creates vocational training workshops that provides raw materials and training for youths and women that produce crafts for sale. This support allows families to focus on retaining earned income and reinvesting it into their communities, developing economic independence.
~50% of Uganda's population is under 15 years of age, and only ~50% of them will complete primary school. This gap in educational achievement produces long term impacts on the economy, with ~41% of Ugandans surviving on a wage of less that $2 a day. In 1999, Cosma's first scholarship participant, Dennis Mukasa, was orphaned at 6 years old. Dennis has since earned a medical diploma opened a community medical center near Kampala, illustrating both the dire need of the community and its potential.
Cosma currently provides tuition, supplies and academic support to 45 children. This relieves a major burden for hard working families but its only a drop in the bucket. Cosma has a large waiting list of at-risk children, and needs your support!
In the short term, this allows hardworking families to save more money for reinvestment in their community. In the long term, this increases literacy rates across the region, increases overall educational achievement, improves their health, and allows children to reach their full potential, empowering them to create a bright future for themselves and their families.
