This project wants to cope with the widespread issue of child malnutrition in the regions of Zou and Atacora (Benin), through the supply of milk powder to undernourished newborns in the Hospital of Tanguieta and in three local accommodation centres.
In the regions of Zou and Atacora, child death rate is extremely high and newborns are often underweight. Breastfeeding without blood ties is not contemplated in Benin's culture and AIDS is a widespread disease. All these factors lead to malnutrition, which causes even more deceases among children.
The project consists in the supply of milk powder to undernourished newborns in the Hospital of Tanguieta and in the three accommodation centres managed by Aleimar in cooperation with a local religious institute. The centres are located near the main traffic ways and many families from the surrounding villages lean on these structures, where a team composed by nuns and local "mamans" takes care of about 130 children.
The project's main goals are to promote children's right to life and health and to avoid newborns' premature death caused by malnutrition and undernourishment. The beneficiaries are orphans and babies whose mothers cannot breastfeed, mainly because affected by HIV.
