Skyrocketing food prices in Benin

Dear Donors,
with this report we would like to update all of you about the general situation in Benin and in particular about our activities. In September all the schools have reopen and the lessons have restarted after the summer break. In October our volunteer and surgeon Piero Buffa had spent one month operating in the hospital of Tanguiéta.
During the last two weeks of the monitoring trip he has travelled in order to supervise our projects in the Country, visiting all the children and families supported. We can not deny that the general situation of Benin is worsening: the inflation rate has reached unsustainable levels and in particular the prices of food, building materials and imported goods are increasing; the rise in poverty is involving 80% of the population. The biggest and really urgent problems are hunger and malnutrition and drag a great number of young people and children.
The Central Government does not provide the population with economic contributes: that’s why the role of local and international associations is really important, even if the economic, health and social emergency has reduced their resources and possibilities.
With our project we keep on supporting children in the regions of Zou and Atakora and newborns in the Hospital of Tanguiéta, avoiding the risk of malnutrition thanks to the distribution of powder milk. During the last 3 months we have raised almost 200 dollars thanks to your donations to GlobalGiving and additional funds by Italian donors, but we are aware that the need is always higher. We know that the entire world is facing a really challenging phase that is deeply toughing every one of us. We are sure that the value of solidarity and cooperation is still strong and thanks to your help we will be able to support always more children, ensuring them a better future!
Thank you!

Dear Donor,
As announced in the previous report, at the end of May our Country Manager Antonio Carettoni with the President of Aleimar Sergio Sali, the Head of the Project Office of Aleimar Ilaria Ventura and the Volunteer and Counselor Daria De Siero came back to Benin for the periodic monitoring trip.
This eleven-day journey has been the opportunity to visit all our project in the Country and to tie stronger relationships with our local representatives on the field that work every day in favor of all the children supported also thanks to your help. With your donations and with the support of other private donors we have been able to raise 5.900 Euros (5853 USD) that allowed us to buy and deliver 14 kg of powder milk and 200 homogenized.
We have delivered all the milk to the centers that support malnourished children in Atakora and to the Hospital of Tanguieta. These are the words of Daria’s diary that describe the moment of the first delivery of milk: “we have delivered the first boxes of milk and the small mouths of the children hosted in the center became covered by white moustaches. The big eyes of G. have conquered the heart of everyone of us while he was taking his first steps”.
Despite we have reached some of our important goals, our activities never stop! Our local representatives that work in the field have reported that nowadays the price of staple food and milk is always higher due to the economic consequences of the pandemics and to current international tensions. They call this “the crises of corn” and always more people and children suffer from malnutrition.
Thanks to your support we can give a concrete contribution to the population!
Thank you!

Dear Donor,
in the Country our activities are going on without a break. The Covid situation, in terms of cases and deaths, seems not to be worsened except from some local closures. It is always difficult to have reliable data about the health situation in some rural villages; in general, the World Health Organization reports 26.610 confirmed cases and 163 deaths since January 2020 till May 2022. Unfortunately, it is always clearer that Covid-19 has become widespread in addition to many other illnesses that affect the population of the Country.
In particular, according to the World Food Program, 9.6% of the households are food insecure and 32% of the children under 5 in the Country suffer from chronic malnutrition. Aleimar and its local partners are always working in order to support the population of the regions of Zou and Atacora to cope with malnutrition.
At the end of this month we will finally come back to Benin, in particular to the Hospital of Tanguieta and in three reception centers that we support; there we will deliver milk powder and baby food for the newborns and children hosted and nursed. We can do all this thanks to your help and if you want to be part of this journey, keep on supporting Aleimar and all the children assisted by the project!
Thank you
