Creating a Frontline with local leaders

By Seguya Ivan | Project leader

we’ve learned over the past years: the most effective path to a community’s heart runs through its own leaders.

When we began working in Mwanyagiri, we quickly realised that external solutions, however well-intentioned, rarely take root without local ownership. So we shifted our approach. We started engaging directly with village elders, women’s groups, youth representatives, and religious leaders—the people whom families already trust. The difference has been remarkable.

These local leaders know exactly who among them is most vulnerable. They guided us to households silently suffering—not just in visible poverty, but where young girls were being pulled from school for forced marriages, and where children as young as seven were labouring in fields to help their families survive. Because the invitation came from respected neighbours, families accepted support without stigma.

Together, we are not simply distributing aid; we are building sustainable solutions. With your support, we have provided emergency food and medicine to families on the brink. We have delivered cash assistance that allowed parents to keep their children home—and in school—instead of sending them to work. We have equipped mothers with small-business training, helping them launch income-generating activities like poultry rearing and soap-making so they can feed their children with dignity.

Most powerfully, local leaders are now publicly advocating against child marriage and child labour. They are becoming the voice of lasting change, speaking not from foreign scripts but from their own conviction. This is how progress becomes permanent.

Your generosity made this possible. By trusting local leadership, you have helped create a model where communities solve their own challenges—and protect their own children—long after our programmes conclude.

Thank you for standing with us and with them.
