Listening to Communities to Strengthen Girls' Educ

By Seguya Ivan | Project leader

we recognize that effective education interventions must be informed by the experiences and priorities of the communities they are designed to serve. As part of our commitment to promoting girls’ education, we engaged girls, parents, caregivers, teachers, and other community stakeholders to better understand the barriers preventing vulnerable girls from accessing and remaining in school.

Our engagement highlighted several interconnected challenges. Poverty remains a significant barrier, with some families struggling to meet essential education-related costs. Girls may also face household responsibilities, limited parental support, menstrual hygiene challenges, and social attitudes that can influence whether their education is prioritized.

Importantly, we also listened to girls themselves. Their perspectives demonstrated a strong desire to remain in school, complete their education, and pursue meaningful opportunities for their future. Their voices reinforced our understanding that girls are not lacking ambition; rather, many are navigating circumstances that can limit their ability to realize their potential.

The consultations helped us recognize that supporting girls’ education requires a holistic response. Providing educational materials is important, but sustainable progress also requires working with families and communities to strengthen positive attitudes toward girls’ education.

This listening process enables our organization to invest resources where they can make the greatest difference. Donor support allows us to respond to needs identified directly by the girls and communities we serve rather than relying on assumptions.

By listening first, we are building education interventions that are relevant, responsive, and grounded in the realities of vulnerable communities
