Growing Income, Keeping more children in classroom

By Seguya Ivan | Project leader

In the communities we serve, poverty can place difficult choices in front of families. When household income is unpredictable and food is not always secure, the costs associated with education can become overwhelming, putting girls at greater risk of missing school or dropping out altogether. Through this program, we are responding to this challenge by helping families strengthen the very livelihoods that support a child’s education.

We are promoting agriculture as a pathway to both food security and economic opportunity. Families and caregivers are equipped with practical knowledge in improved farming techniques, crop diversification, soil management, water conservation, post-harvest handling, and market-oriented production. These skills help households move from subsistence farming toward more productive and sustainable agricultural enterprises.

The benefits are already meaningful at the community level. Families are better positioned to produce food for their households, reduce dependence on costly food purchases, and generate income from surplus produce. This additional income can help caregivers meet school-related needs, including scholastic materials, uniforms, meals, transportation, and other essential requirements that might otherwise become barriers to a girl's education.

Beyond individual households, the approach strengthens the wider community. Productive farming creates opportunities for local trade, encourages families to invest in their livelihoods, improves access to nutritious food, and builds greater resilience against economic hardship. Most importantly, it helps create households where education can be sustained rather than sacrificed because of poverty.

For every family that becomes more economically secure, there is a greater opportunity for a girl to remain in school, complete her education, and prepare for a future beyond poverty.

Donor support can help us reach more vulnerable families with agricultural knowledge, practical resources, and livelihood opportunities—creating a lasting connection between stronger households and brighter educational futures for girls.

When we help a family grow its income, we are not only growing food—we are growing opportunity, dignity, resilience, and the possibility of a child staying in school.
