Summary

We support 23,037 grandmothers across 3 districts in rural southwest Uganda to care for more than 92,148 children. These grandmothers have volunteered to care for their grandchildren and other children who have been orphaned or abandoned. We provide extensive training, access to microfinance & support to start small businesses so that these grandmothers can learn new skills, generate an income, and provide food, education, and medical care for their children.

Challenge

These grandmothers, in their twilight years, have taken responsibility for a generation of grandchildren who have been orphaned, abandoned, or are otherwise especially vulnerable. These grandmothers are living in extreme poverty, on $1-2 per day, without social security, retirement, child welfare, or health care. Our program means that grandmothers can generate an income, and provide more than 60,000 children with a safe and loving home and access to health care and education opportunities.

Solution

Your donation helps provide these grandmothers micro-finance services including access to micro-loans, savings and financial education, to set up small businesses and generate an income for their households. Nyaka grandmothers are part of 254 self-led groups, with elected leaders, supported by Nyaka staff. These groups attend training, share experiences, support one another, and make decisions. Training topics include financial management, small business skills, parenting, health, and nutrition.

Long-Term Impact

Grandmothers and orphans need one another to survive. A child must be supported both at school and at home; this means assisting grandmothers to assist their grandchildren. Your donation provides the grandmothers with training and knowledge, covering a diverse array of topics, including vocational skills training, financial literacy, water sanitation and hygiene, micro-finance, livestock farming, agriculture, and more.
