Nyssa is a one-stop center for mental health, early learning, and fighting learning disabilities. Located in Buea, Cameroon, the center provides therapy and learning through play to children. Nyssa is an alternative to the standard Cameroonian education system and also provides specialized therapy for those who need it.
In Cameroon, there are limited options for specialized education, therapy for children's disabilities, and early-learning. Children like Cynthia (not real name) often stay out of the education system. Cynthia is non-verbal autistic. She had never been to school because her family was afraid that she would not fit. She faced challenges interacting and staying in places which are not home. She was one of the first participants in Nyssa:
"We've seen a huge shift. She feels happier and more included, she walks towards other children to play, she started keeping eye contact. I was so surprised how much she cried this morning because we were running late to come here. I don't know what you are doing but keep doing it. I am sure to register her in school this year." Grandmother of participant.
Your donation can sponsor early-education, special education, and/or therapy for a child like Mike. Mike (not real name) is 12 and has dyslexia and dyscalculia. He struggled academically and felt isolated in school because he could barely do math or read. After participating in Nyssa's individual and group therapy sessions 5 days a week, he overcame these difficulties. Mike's test scores increased by 70% within three months.
