CARING FOR THEIR BODIES, HEALING THEIR SOULS

By Veronica Taveras | Project Leader

LA RED BENDICIÓN and THE BIENVENIDO PROJECT – FUNFONAVI carried out a successful Medical and Dental Outreach in the community of Bienvenido, where vulnerable and low-income families received free, high-quality healthcare.

This initiative was made possible thanks to the participation of a team of healthcare professionals, made up of more than 25 doctors from different parts of the world, who, motivated by love, offered their services and solidarity. They joined efforts to provide comprehensive care to families in the community. Their humanitarian vocation was fundamental to the successful development of this medical outreach.

During the health campaign, a total of 260 patients of all ages were treated, as follows:

  • 42 patients in the Dentistry area, where oral evaluations, cleanings (prophylaxis), simple extractions, and oral hygiene education were provided. Each patient received a toothbrush.
  • 218 patients in General Medicine, who received full consultations, vital sign assessments, diagnoses, and guidance. Each patient received the appropriate medications according to their diagnosis. This health campaign brought great benefit to the community, as both children and adults are very vulnerable when it comes to routine check-ups due to economic limitations.

The Medical Outreach was conducted in an organized environment characterized by commitment and human warmth, where the medical team, along with support staff and volunteers from The Bienvenido Project, worked in a coordinated manner to provide dignified and efficient service to all attendees.

IMPACT STORY

During the medical outreach in the community of Bienvenido de Manoguayabo, we experienced multiple situations that reflect the value of preventive healthcare.

Two women, aged 25 and 45, both mothers of beneficiary children, came seeking medical care for their children and for themselves. Both women presented with elevated blood pressure levels, a silent but very dangerous condition if not detected in time. They were immediately attended by doctors, who administered medication according to their condition and placed them under observation to monitor their progress, stabilize their blood pressure, and prevent any adverse events.

After the observation period, both mothers showed positive progress, successfully stabilizing their blood pressure levels. This allowed them to return home safely and with peace of mind, together with their children and out of danger.

HOME VISIT

One of the most meaningful actions within the health initiative was a home visit to an elderly adult who, due to her physical condition, was unable to attend the outreach. A 90-year-old woman was visited by the medical team, who provided her with the care and attention she needed at home, offering dignified, compassionate, and personalized treatment, as well as medications. This demonstrated that healthcare has no barriers—it is about serving those most in need.

This act of love had a positive impact on her family. Her daughter was also treated during the outreach, receiving dental care, including necessary extractions that relieved her discomfort and improved her oral health. Thanks to this dual intervention—home care for the mother and clinical care for the daughter—we were able to improve the quality of life of both, strengthening their health and emotional well-being.
