Summary

Digital education systems are built by privileged people for privileged people. Everyone else is relegated to systems that were already antiquated in 2000. This project will develop the Agavi learning system, a smartphone-based learning system that allows teachers to build immersive task-based activities for students that use the smartphone as a partner in learning (rather than a portal to videos and quizzes). We will deploy this system in war-torn Ukraine to help students keep learning.

Challenge

Teaching technology in the First World is experiencing a golden age, providing students with individualized tutoring, virtual reality, and project-based learning at massive scales. But the technology is essentially useless in places where the infrastructure has been shattered by war. To help a country survive and recover from war, students must maintain their education, even when there are few facilities and tools, so that they can help rebuild their homeland.

Solution

We are developing a smartphone-based digital teaching tool, Agavi, to help teachers construct their own experiential science activities for use in lab and field settings, one that can work offline. We also train them in building effective interactive classrooms that benefit students more than passive lectures. By working with innovative faculty who are hungering for approaches that allow them to become more effective teachers, we plant the seeds for widespread national transformation.

Long-Term Impact

With a powerful experiential digital teaching tool that both teachers and students can use completely offline through their smartphones, we'll be able to help teachers maintain their teaching and students to maintain their learning even as critical Ukrainian infrastructure is bombed. By maintaining a high level of education even under extreme circumstances, the nation will be able to rebuild itself faster when the war is over.
