My name is Perla Ceh-Cocom and my role as the Second Chance Driver at OHS allows me the opportunity to be a part of rescuing animals, often from dire, unsafe conditions, and transporting them to safety at our shelters where they finally get the care and attention they deserve. Chartres was among 150 dogs, mostly French Bulldogs, rescued from a suspected puppy mill case. The dogs were discovered during a domestic violence investigation and were living in small cages in their own waste, with many needing medical attention. We mobilized quickly to help transfer the dogs. And thanks to the support of donors like you, 42 of the dogs, including Chartres, were brought to OHS to begin their new life.
It was early on a hot Sunday morning when I hit the road in our transport vehicle. The OHS Second Chance team spent the previous three days preparing the transport plan and vehicle to ensure Chartres and the other dogs were comfortable on their journey. Like a game of Tetris, kennels were strategically placed with thick, soft blankets to ensure the animals were safe and that Chartres could calmly rest through the long 10-hour drive home. It is our donors that provided the supplies, cooling packs, nutritious food, traveling water bowls, and the temperature-controlled vehicle to transport Chartres to her new life in Portland.
After I arrived back at OHS, I worked with our incredible Second Chance volunteers and other rescue groups to welcome Chartres and the other dogs. She was tired and appeared swollen all over her body but did a great job of patiently settling in as we took care to comfort and secure her. It was not hard to see what a good girl sweet Chartres was. Even after all she had just been through, I saw nothing but love in those pretty eyes.
Our Second Chance and medical teams were on standby, ready to provide immediate care to all the dogs rescued that day. Donations from OHS supporters like you enabled us to treat all of Chartres’ medical needs and provided resources that allowed Chartres the recovery time she and the other 41 rescued dogs needed in experienced OHS foster homes, until they were ready for adoption day.
When I first met Chartres, I had a feeling she would find a home quickly. One look into those sweet, loving eyes and you were hooked. I am happy to share that it did not take long for Chartres to find her new home, where this special girl is now free to live her best dog life!
Whether the pets at Oregon Humane Society are transported in from a suspected puppy mill case, rescued from criminal abuse or neglect by our Humane Special Agents, or transferred from another shelter, more loving pets like Chartres need your help. We ask that you join with us in creating a more humane society and give today to help more vulnerable pets in need.
Thank you for helping pets like Chartres get the second chance and loving homes they deserve.
