Challenge

The suburb of Moore, OK was severely damaged by the massive tornado that struck on May 20, 2013. Emergency relief efforts are underway. This fund will provide both short and long term assistance to victims.

Solution

This fund will support disaster recovery and relief efforts in the aftermath of tornadoes in Oklahoma. Initial funds will help survivors and victims get necessary supplies including food, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Once these needs are met, remaining funds will go towards longer term rebuilding and recovery efforts.

Long-Term Impact

Major disasters always require a huge amount of support to provide both immediate relief and recovery. Organizations that are deeply-rooted in local communities are often the in the best position to provide long-term support for disaster victims. Once recovery work is complete, this fund will transition to support longer-term recovery efforts by those types of organizations. Follow the "reports" tab for updates about how the fund is disbursed and put to work.

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
