Plastic waste blocks streets, drains, and gutters in Nigeria's slums, leading to floods, dirty surroundings, and disease outbreaks. This project will remove 100 million plastic items through a cleanup challenge in informal communities. One hundred volunteers will collect plastic and receive rewards based on volume collected. Each participant will also receive a custom T-shirt. All plastic will be sorted and sent to recyclers to support cleaner, and safer from flood-related risks.
In many Nigerian slums, plastic blocks drainages, piles up in streets, and ends up in open sewage. This leads to stagnant water, mosquito breeding, and flooding during the rainy season. City sanitation workers rarely reach these areas, and there's no organized waste collection. The situation worsens during storms when blocked waterways flood homes, displace families, and spread disease.
This project will mobilize volunteers, local youth and residents to collect plastic waste through cleanup challenges. Participants will be given tools, training, and collection targets. Plastics will be sorted and sent to recycling centers. Local champions will coordinate activities, track weight collected, and reward participants with items like food, tuition support, or phone airtime.
Frequent cleanups will help reduce flooding, mosquito breeding, and disease outbreaks. Residents will take more part in keeping their surroundings clean. Plastic collection may grow into a habit and a small income source for some. As cleanup efforts continue, slums can become less exposed to flood damage, making them safer for children, women, and elderly residents.
