Plastic Waste Blocks Drains and Floods Slum

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We appreciate the interest shown in the 100 Million Plastic Cleanup Challenge in Slums project. At the moment, however, no donations have been received for this effort, and the cleanup campaign has not yet begun.

In many informal settlements across Nigeria, plastic waste accumulates quickly because there is little or no organized waste collection. Bottles, bags, and other plastic items often clog gutters and drainage channels. When the rainy season arrives, blocked drains cause water to overflow into streets and homes.

Flooding in these areas creates serious health and safety concerns. Stagnant water encourages mosquito breeding and increases the risk of malaria and other illnesses. Dirty surroundings also expose residents—especially children—to infections and unsafe living conditions. Because sanitation services rarely reach these neighborhoods, the problem continues to grow.

This project aims to remove 100 million plastic items from slum communities through organized cleanup activities. Volunteers and local residents will take part in collection challenges, gathering plastic waste from streets, gutters, and open spaces. Participants will receive simple tools, safety guidance, and collection targets to guide their efforts.

Collected plastics will be sorted and transported to recycling centers so they can be processed instead of returning to the environment. Volunteers who participate will receive recognition and small rewards based on the volume they collect, and each participant will also receive a custom campaign T-shirt.

The goal is not only to clean the environment but also to encourage residents to take an active role in maintaining safer surroundings. Community-led cleanups can gradually reduce flooding risks and improve public health conditions.

We are thankful for the attention this initiative has received and for everyone who believes that cleaner communities lead to healthier lives. With the help of caring supporters, this cleanup challenge can soon begin transforming these neighborhoods into safer and healthier places to live.

Sincerely,

Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
Project Leader
