Water, Hygiene & Dignity ,49 families of Honduras

Community: Las Parcelas, Honduras

We are pleased to share a significant milestone in improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions for the families of Las Parcelas, Honduras. Thanks to the generous support of GlobalGiving donors, 49 families (117 people) are now benefiting from safe water, hygiene education, and improved sanitation solutions that will have a lasting impact on their health and well-being.

Safe Water Access

Every one of the 49 households has received a biosand water filter, providing families with a sustainable household water treatment solution. These filters effectively remove harmful pathogens and improve the quality of drinking water, helping reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and ensuring that children and adults have access to safer water every day.

To ensure the long-term sustainability of the project, Agua Pura para el Mundo (APPM) trained 12 local community technicians who will provide ongoing technical support, maintenance, and follow-up for the biosand filters to each home, while also build the capacity of new generations of community agents. By building local capacity, the community now has the knowledge and resources needed to keep the filters functioning effectively for many years.

Hygiene Education

All 49 families participated in hygiene promotion training, where they learned practical behaviors that help prevent disease and improve family health. The sessions covered topics such as handwashing with soap, safe water handling and storage, household sanitation, and the importance of maintaining a clean environment and the importance of drinking clean water to maintain their children and their health. These trainings complement the biosand filters by helping families adopt healthy practices that maximize the benefits of safe drinking water.

Sanitation Progress

Construction of the household latrines is currently underway. All 49 families have already dug their latrine pits and received the necessary construction materials ( it was a challange delivering the materials due to road conditions, almost 8 trips in a 4 by 4 truck where made). Families as part of a counterpart help out with local labor and material ( sand and rocks) and are now producing the adobe bricks needed for the latrine superstructures. Due to current weather conditions, the adobe bricks are taking longer than expected to dry. Despite this temporary delay, families remain highly motivated and eager to complete their latrines. With all other construction materials already on site, construction will move forward as soon as the bricks are fully cured and ready for use.

Community Impact

Perhaps the most inspiring part of this project has been witnessing the joy and gratitude expressed by the community. Many families shared that they had waited nearly seven years for an organization to support them in obtaining safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services. This project has transformed that hope into reality.

Beyond providing infrastructure, this initiative has empowered families with knowledge, strengthened community leadership through local technician training, and laid the foundation for healthier and more resilient households.
