'Low-quality,' 'painfully underresourced,' and 'hopeless' are words commonly used to describe rural schools in El Salvador. Poor infrastructure and low student performance plague the Salvadoran school system. For example, only 7% of sixth-grade students meet the minimum performance standard in math. With more than 70% of schools considered rural in El Salvador, our work at Perkin Educational Opportunities Foundation, Inc. is critical, with Amun Shea School as a transformative model for all.
Amun Shea School is a full-day, high-quality educational program that provides students (ages 5+) with the skills and tools to become #changemakers for their families and communities. Through Amun Shea School's commitment to climate action and land stewardship, innovative entrepreneurship, and relevant technical training, we reimagine what rural education can be and will directly transform the educational system for a brighter and more peaceful El Salvador.
Rural education that is focused on solving socioeconomic obstacles while also attending to students' desires and needs will not only open doors for students and their families at Amun Shea but for all students in rural El Salvador, as our school's model serves as a revolutionary prototype. Amun Shea students will become innovative thinkers and powerful agents of change who will be responsible for long-term, positive improvements in community development. They are future Salvadoran leaders.
