Project update live from the field

By Ciara Baumgartner | Fundraising Officer

Hi,

I just got back from Ethiopia after participating in the Great Ethiopian Run and visiting Orbis's eye care projects in rural southern Ethiopia. I am still so blown away by the whole trip, but in particular, the work of Orbis.

During the trip, I had the chance to visit one of the schools supported by Orbis. The impact of their work in the area is truly remarkable. Orbis recently funded a water supply for the school, and I saw how it has benefited the students and the community. It's something I won't forget anytime soon! By providing clean water and educating children to keep their faces and hands clean, Orbis is significantly reducing the spread of bacterial eye diseases that can cause blindness.

The construction of rainwater harvesting systems funded by Orbis plays a crucial role in promoting health and preventing diseases, particularly trachoma, in schools and among children. Trachoma is an infectious eye disease caused by the bacterium and is a leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has developed the SAFE strategy to address and control trachoma, where SAFE stands for Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, and Environmental improvement, including the promotion of water and sanitation.

Rainwater harvesting systems offer a sustainable and local source of clean water for schools and communities. This access is crucial for maintaining proper hygiene and preventing the spread of trachoma. Students and staff can use this water for drinking, washing hands, and overall cleanliness.

The presence of water through rainwater harvesting systems provides an opportunity for hygiene education in schools. Students can be educated on the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices, including face washing, handwashing, and keeping their surroundings clean. Additionally, the provision of a reliable source of clean water through rainwater harvesting systems contributes to the overall improvement of water quality. This not only helps prevent trachoma but also reduces the risk of other waterborne diseases that can impact the health of children and communities. Involving the community in the construction and maintenance of these systems fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility, ensuring the long-term success of the initiative.

We couldn’t do this without you. Thank you for your continuous support.
