ADVANCED EDUCATION FOR THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN

Thousands more orphans and vulnerable children will have advanced education facilities this year as a result of The Butterfly Tree receiving an overwhelming amount of support to build more rural schools in Zambia.

We have just completed a 1x3 classroom block and teacher’s house in Namachele in Kalomo District. Simukumbwa school, also in Kalomo District, has a borehole and a new 1x2 classroom block with more infrastructure to follow due to a successful fundraising event in London last week. Two teacher’s houses will be added to the school, as well as toilets and desks.

After the introduction of the new curriculum in January all secondary schools need expansion. Three of the ones that we previously developed will have extra facilities. Riverview, with the combined total of pupils for both the primary and secondary schools, now has over 2,000 pupils. A 1x3 classroom block is currently under construction. Nguba secondary school is getting a 1x3 classroom block and a boarding house for pupils who live long distances from the school. We are also building a boarding house at Musokotwane secondary school.

The charity has included more schools in our orphan sponsorship programme. Two hundred pupils from the following schools are currently under sponsorship: Mukuni, N’gandu, Kamwi, N’dele, Riverview, Kazungula boarding, Senkobo, Musokotwane and Singwamba. Seven students will complete university and colleges course this year.

The extensive special education project, which we introduced in November 2024, is now in operation. Entitled ‘Improving Education for Young People with Special Needs’ the aim of the project was to train teachers how to help children with special needs in an inclusive education system. Three teachers from each of the 161 rural schools attended training sessions in nine zones. In addition, we have produced a guidance manual to be handed to every school in the Kazungula District as well as specialised equipment and educational materials.

We cannot thank our donors enough for the tremendous support we have received so far, this year.
