Care for Children has been granted unprecedented access by the Chinese government to some of the poorest regions of China, including Tibet, to help place thousands of orphans into good, local families as a positive alternative to institutional care. This is a pioneering opportunity to ensure some of the world's most vulnerable children are placed into secure and loving families.
The millions of children around the world living in orphanages and other forms of residential care are amongst the most vulnerable in the world (Save The Children, 2009). Orphan care in the western, poorer regions of China is in urgent need of reform and there are thousands of children in theses areas who are in desperate need of a family's care and attention.
Care for Children believes that families are the best environment for children to grow up in. The loving support of a family can provide a child security and safety, love, food, water, sanitation, education, health, stimulation and nurture. We train local, on-the-ground social workers in how to implement and support a successful foster family-placement program that moves children out of institutions and into good, local families.
This project has the opportunity to impact tens of thousands of children, and is a significant development in our 'vision for a million' children in local families. We desire to contribute to the development of a strong child welfare system in China, giving all orphans the opportunity to live in a local family as a positive alternative to institutional care. We have the unique opportunity to work alongside both senior government and grassroots levels to be agents of this positive change.
