Summary

The COVID-19 had deeply impacted tourist communities. During the pandemic, we realized that many older people were not being taken care of by their families even before the pandemic. Many live in tin houses with dirt floors and no running water. During the pandemic, we delivered almost 1000 food packages to 50 families living in such conditions prioritizing abandoned adults and people with physical limitations. Since then we have been there for the most vulnerable every month.

Challenge

Drake Bay and its surrounding communities are small rural communities, where most of the population depends directly or indirectly on tourism. Given the world situation, tourism has been one of the most affected sectors. The elderly in Drake Bay often survived with the support of their children and close relatives, who at this time due to the fall in tourism are going to be out of work. In addition, these older adults are in very isolated communities, which generates greater risk.

Solution

With tourism being the main source of income, the elderly will be among the first and hardest-hit victims of the COVID19. We will direct our talents, energy, and time to collect money and goods, then deliver food baskets and supplies to help lessen some of the health risks and economic damage facing the elderly. The FACOSA (The Osa Community Support Project) has already disbursed around $45,000 USD for several community projects. We have served this community for over 20 years.

Long-Term Impact

We are collecting goods and cleaning supplies for the most vulnerable population at the moment - the elderly people of Drake Bay. We hope that by supporting them, we will be able to reduce their need to look for informal jobs to survive and their risk of getting sick. We want them to stay at home and have food, cleaning supplies or medicines, to be safe and have their dignity. There are at least 53 people 65 or older living in poverty and isolation in Drake Bay. They need help.
