Weaving Dreams in Osa's Communities

By Francisco Delgado | Executive Director

This quarter, the Osa Community Support Fund has continued to strengthen community resilience, local leadership, environmental awareness, and cultural identity across several rural areas of the Osa Peninsula. From archaeological tourism to animal welfare and women’s empowerment, our commitment remains rooted in holistic support that uplifts people and the environment together.

Weaving Dreams: Rural and Archaeological Tourism with a Local Face

The community initiative, “Entretejiendo Sueños” (Weaving Dreams), is training and empowering local families from El Progreso, Ganadito, Los Ángeles, and Rancho Quemado to create tourism experiences based on cultural heritage and archaeology.

With the support of the National Museum of Costa Rica, 20 families participated in workshops on archaeology and photography, and took part in research activities on farms neighboring El Progreso, and in partnership with the UNED (State Distance University – Osa Campus), we conducted 6 field visits to existing Rural Community Tourism projects, helping entrepreneurs promote their initiatives and strengthen their outreach strategies.

Animal Welfare: Castration Campaign

We carried out a sterilization campaign focused on both dogs and cats in our rural communities. We successfully spayed/neutered 32 pets, helping reduce overpopulation and improve animal health.

Emergency Preparedness and Community Safety

We are active members of the Local Emergency Committee of Drake Bay, working to prepare communities for natural disasters such as tsunamis and earthquakes.

  • We held 4 community meetings in Rincón, Caletas, Agujitas, and Progreso, with the participation of around 50 residents.

  • As part of the Tsunami Ready Program, we supported the placement of 72 tsunami safety signs and are coordinating the installation of 25 more signs in Agujitas and Progreso.

Caring for Our Elders: Dignity and Joy

We’re committed to the well-being of the elderly in Los Ángeles, Ganadito, and Progreso, supporting monthly gatherings for about 15 older adults.

So far, we have held 4 sessions, offering crafts, dancing, storytelling, soap-making workshops, and yoga, moments of joy, movement, and connection for our beloved elders.

Supporting Rural Women’s Empowerment

Finally, we proudly supported transportation for participants attending the 5th Rural Women’s Gathering in Golfo Dulce, held on August 2, 2025.

This event, organized by Biriteca Agroecológica and other community-based organizations, is part of the umbrella project “When One of Us Heals, We All Heal”. It is a vibrant space for dialogue, artistic expression, workshops, a local crafts market, and collective self-care, empowering rural women as pillars of community life and change.

Each of these actions, from a sterilized pet to an elder dancing, from a clean trail in Corcovado to a new tourism vision in Rancho Quemado, reflects your impact. Thanks to your support, dreams continue to be woven, and lived, in the Osa Peninsula.

Thank you for standing with us.
