Honoring Community and Building Resilience in Drake Bay

By Francisco Delgado | Executive Director

In the first months of 2026, our work in Drake Bay has focused on something essential: people and community.

In El Progreso, we spent time with older adults who are, in many ways, the founders of the community. Many of them have lived in the area for over 50 or even 60 years. Last month, we organized a small trip to Playa Blanca. For some, it was their first time visiting; for others, it was a return after decades, back to a place they once knew before tourism transformed the region. The experience was deeply emotional, filled with memories, stories, and a renewed sense of belonging.

At the same time, we continued strengthening community safety through the Tsunami Ready initiative. So far, 60 evacuation signs have been installed across the communities of Rincón, Caletas, Agujitas, and El Progreso. A few signs are still pending installation in Agujitas, after which the process will move into its next phase: community-wide evacuation drills, planned for June.

These efforts reflect a broader vision, supporting not only immediate needs, but also long-term resilience, safety, and connection within the community.

Thank you for helping us stand with the people of Drake Bay.
