16 OSCAR girls & boys set off to the UK for the trip of a lifetime.

By Lucinda Sowerbutts | Head of OSCAR International

We are very proud of the OSCAR Child Sponsorship Programme, which continues to make a profound impact on girls and boys who live very challenging lives in low income communities in India. All OSCAR children regularly attend school, they recognise the importance of education and are determined to work hard to change their lives. OSCAR beneficiaires are role models in their communities.

This year we have some exciting news. 16 underprivildged girls and boys have been selected for the 4th OSCAR UK School Tour, a two week education, football and culture trip. Planning the tour is not straightforward, at the outset the children do not even own a birth certificate. OSCAR International is very proud of the dedicated Mumbai team, who stop at nothing to facilitate for children in their community. The application for birth certificates, passports and UK visas is onerous, requiring patience and determination, which the OSCAR staff have in abundance.

The boys and girls are selected on merit, school attendance and of course football skills. The tour is sponsored and hosted by UK Schools. Thousands of pupils gather together to raise funds to create a once in a lifetime opportunity. The tour inspires and motivates everyone involved, OSCAR children, UK pupils and teachers alike. Young people from vastly different socio economic backgrounds share and learn from each other.

The tour takes place from 1-15th October 2023 and we hope you will follow the team's incredible journey on our social media channels. Please also spend a few moments watching the ES Newspaper's film on OSCAR's Saloni and Aarti, they share the difficulites of living in a patriarchal society, challenges of doing things differently and their contagious excitement for travelling to the UK. The film is part of ES's 'Let Girls Learn' series.
