Bangladesh Severe Floods: Oxfam is Responding

By Kendall Wells | Oxfam GB

Dear donor,

Firstly, thank you so much for your past generosity; your support has already made a meaningful impact on our mission and has allowed us to react swiftly to the current emergency situation in Bangladesh. You will likely be aware of the severe flash floods that have hit large regions of the country, amongst the worst in recent memory. I wanted to let you know that Oxfam and our partners are already delivering urgent aid, and invite your support to our response in communities affected by the floods.

Flood damage: immediate need and longer term risks:
As of Sunday, 25 August, five million people are affected, with at least 18 people dead and 200,000 people displaced. The floods have devastated 12 districts. Roads have been cut off and communication networks are down, severely hampering the coordination of relief efforts. Millions of people are stranded and in desperate need now. Flood damage to over 350,000 hectares of crops threatens food security in the coming months.

Nazrul, a resident of Feni district, described the reality:

“We have lost everything. Our home is now completely submerged under water. We have no food to eat, no clean water to drink and no place to turn to for help. We are struggling to survive each day, praying for any assistance that can help us make it through this nightmare”.

Araf, an Oxfam Bangladesh Civil Engineer, shares an update on our response in this one-minute video (apologies for the audio quality).

Oxfam Response
Oxfam plans to intensify our efforts, working with partners to address critical needs including water, sanitation, and shelter. Our response will include the distribution of dignity kits, baby food, and cooked meals.

We are urgently seeking £2.5 million to reach 170,000 people. Additionally, £4.2 million is required for longer-term rehabilitation efforts to support 300,000 people by restoring water and sanitation facilities, shelter repairs, and supporting the rebuilding of livelihoods and community infrastructure.
Oxfam's response will focus on Feni, Noakhali, Chittagong, the Hill Tracts, and Moulvibazar.

We deeply appreciate your previous contributions, and with your continued support, we can achieve even greater outcomes together. Please consider joining us in providing urgent relief to those affected in Bangladesh.
