Update on AHD project on Safe Drinking water for Flood victims in Pakistan on GlobalGiving:
Association for Humanitarian Development (AHD), under its project ‘Safe Drinking Water for Flood victims in Pakistan, has installed 498 Nadi filters in 03 UCs of Tehsil Matli in Badin District.
District Badin lies at distal part of Sindh, Arabian Sea and Rann of Kacch being its southern boundary; hence most of monsoons cause floods in the district as rain waters from northern high altitude districts find its way through Badin to the sea. The district consecutively faced rain floods in 2011, 2012 and 2013 affecting the District’s rural population which accounts 74% of the total of 1,833,251. The underground water in most of the district is saline hence not potable. The rural population consumes canal water without any treatment because of a number of reasons, including unawareness due to low literacy, un-affordability of buying filter units and lack of Govt.’s initiatives in provision of safe drinking water.
AHD targeted 03 UCs of the Tehsil Matli where so far 498 families are consuming safe drinking water in 17 villages. The families were provided materials and training for preparing Bio-sand filter units for themselves. AHD teams formed CBOs and WASH Committees in the villages, ensured participation of women in training and preparation of Nadi filters.
A total of 6,474 women, men, girls and boys have access to safe drinking water and increased knowledge on personal hygiene practices, through the project.
01 Nadi filter costs PKR 1600 ($ 16.3), while each filter provides safe drinking water for a family of 15 to 20 persons (02 to 03 HHs). The filter requires no fuel/ electricity for its making and function and is lifelong solution for small rural settlements where underground water is not potable.
There are several villages in 02 more UCs of District Badin and some 04 UCs of District Thatta, where there is need for 1000 to 1500 Nadi filters.
