People with Phenylketonuria (PKU) need a special low protein diet with medical food supplements to avoid brain damage. Over the past 15 months, no medical food was allowed to reach the children and adults with PKU in Gaza. Nearly all lost their homes - first we had to find them. We found 182 patients. Right now, we are delivering food baskets filled with fresh vegetables and fruit to minimize damage. We're working to send test kits and medical food as soon as possible. Please help.
75,000 newborns in Gaza were born after October 7th, 2023. The testing lab was destroyed soon after. That means all newborns missed critical blood screening for metabolic conditions including PKU. Shortage of food and the high costs of food items have made it difficult for PKU families to provide their children with a low-protein diet. Pharmaceutical shipments were limited and medical food for PKU patients was available. Some PKU children are showing symptoms of brain damage and extreme anxiety.
Rebuilding Alliance is guided by a remarkable nutritionist in Gaza to support PKU children across Gaza. We've traced and registered 182 PKU children and conducted a survey to better understand their needs. Our team in Gaza is delivering food baskets to all the PKU families, each filled with two weeks' worth of fresh veggies, fruits, and canned goods to meet their nutritional needs. We need your help to send the medical food & restart monthly blood tests - doable with analysis in Ramallah.
PKU Parents in Gaza are seeing significant stabilization in their children's condition due to a low-protein diet. They are asking for a regular supply of fresh vegetables, fruit and medical food. Ideally, if PKU children maintain a low-protein diet throughout childhood and keep phenylalanine levels in check, their health and brain function should remain unaffected. The war made things so much harder - now during ceasefire, your help will get Gaza's PKU community back on track.
