Family is not an important thing it's everything- the building blocks of our society and world! This project supports CMR's core mission of: Strengthening Families in support of the Stability & Protection of Children. Providing parents with courses providing: information, therapy, skills and tools to protect and raise their children in difficult communities - which are often characterised by dangerous influences such as: gangsterism, drugs, alcohol and crime - making their children vulnerable.
In 2018 statistics released in SA revealed that: 41% of all reported rape cases from the past 3 years involved children; 2,600 + children were murdered & thousands of babies abandoned across the country. Many families in Port Elizabeth live in poor areas, with dangerous influences that make their children vulnerable to crime & abuse. Parents need support & special skills in raising & protecting their children from additional risks in challenging communities. We need to help parents be better.
The World Health Organisation acknowledges that effective solutions to prevent child neglect are programmes that support parents and teach positive parenting skills. This project does that - providing courses that: 1. teach & support new mothers: pre & post-natal child care - facilitating adequate parental care and prevention of child neglect; 2. teach & assist parents to sharpen & adjust their parenting skills to adapt & cope with the many challenges of parenthood & dysfunctional communities.
This type of intervention, typically includes support and education of parents, pre-school education, and child care. Ongoing care of children and families can reduce the risk of maltreatment of children reoccurring and can minimize its consequences which include impaired lifelong physical and mental health, and the social and occupational outcomes can ultimately slow a country's economic and social development. Therefore Preventing child maltreatment before it starts is possible.
