Contaminated drinking water kills millions of people each year. We train volunteers to fight water borne disease by testing drinking water and providing methods to make drinking water safe. We have active programs throughout Latin America and especially in Haiti where we are in the fight against cholera.
A million children world wide die each year from contaminated drinking water, and many more are made ill with diarrheal diseases, preventing them from growing, attending school or helping their families. Families often must drink contaminated water because they lack alternatives or the means to make their water safe.
This project will train community health workers and others in Latin America to accurately test water supplies for bacterial contamination. The health workers will then test community drinking water, and families with contaminated drinking water will receive materials and assistance to help to make their water safe using Pasteurization and to cook on safer stoves. We also train interested youth in water testing and sanitation so that they may follow careers in health and community service.
Our goal this year is to help 1000 families in Latin America by providing them with water testing and Water Pasteurization indicators (WAPI's). They will also be helped to obtain safe cooking stoves. These thousand families are part of a long term program to improve the health and reduce deaths and injuries to children and families and to help them to attend school and to be healthy.
