Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean but have very different histories and current conditions. Currently the Dominican Republic is wealthier and more stable, so that Haitians fleeing the violence in their home country sometimes cross over the border and live as very poor subsistence farmers in the mountains. They lack access to services and suffer from diseases due to contaminated water.
Agua Pura has worked for many years to bring safe drinking water to Haiti and a few years ago started a program to help Haitian refugees in rural area of the Dominican Republic. They speak French and Creole and so we brought some of our Haitian staff to help with our project.
In coordination with some American Peace Corps volunteers in the area we were able to train local volunteers to test the driving water for contamination and to distribute water purification indicators (WAPIs) to the communities. Agua Pura is one of the few organizations working to help Haitians on both sides of the border. With the help of GlobalGiving and our generous donors we have been able to continue our work in both countries. And we always appreciate your support.
