By Tom Carter | Executive Director, Agua Pura Para El Pueblo
Agua Pura Para El Pueblo was in Peru last fall presenting our program to communities in all parts of the country. We traveled from the capital of Lima to the mountains of Northern Peru and finally to the high altiplano of the South. Each community was different of course, but all had the same need for clean water and basic sanitation. We vary our program to meet local conditions, but our emphasis on simple steps that families can take to improve their health is the same.
Agua Pura believes that prevention of diarrheal disease depends on more than just providing clean water. Use of latrines, hand washing, proper preparation and cooking of food and others are all steps in what we call the “sanitation cycle”,where each part depends upon and supports the other. Without each step, the process is incomplete and the families still are at risk. It takes commitment on the part of the families to continue using these practices for their own safety. It also takes commitment on the part of Agua Pura to continue supporting the families over time as they work to improve their lives and their health. We of course have accepted our responsibility to help the families we serve, “una familia a la vez” - “one family at a time”. And your support and encouragement has been vital to these the success of these programs! Will you share this report with others who might be interested in our work?
I've attached a few pictures from part of the sanitation cycle:
We are currently working on our program schedule for this year, and it looks as exciting and busy as always, with ongoing programs in Panama, returning to Chiapas in Mexico and several other possible trips. Of course we always invite you, our supporters, to join us on these projects. If you have an interest in volunteering with us please contact me through our website:
Thanks again for your help!
