Peace Winds has outfitted and staffed a former cargo ship to provide basic medical services to the Republic of Palau-an island nation comprised of more than 340 islands in the Western Pacific. The Kenshin, Japanese for "checkup," is currently providing basic hospital services, health check-ups, and capacity building for the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Palau's remote islands.
Palau's only national hospital is located in Koror, Palau's main commercial center, leaving residents of more remote islands without access to basic healthcare. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like heart disease, cancer, and hypertension have been on the rise in recent years, and many Palauans don't have access to healthcare to prevent, detect, or treat diseases. Additionally, many of these residents live a sedentary lifestyle without basic knowledge of healthy eating and exercise.
Peace Winds is working with local doctors, health centers, and the Palau Ministry of Health to provide basic health screenings to hundreds of Palauans who might not otherwise receive regular check-ups. For every visit the Kenshin has made to Palau's remote islands, community members are always lined up at the docks, excited to board the ship and meet with Peace Winds doctors and nurses. By detecting NCDs early, Peace Winds is saving lives and helping Palauans better manage their health.
In addition to providing health screenings, Peace Winds is working to educate community members on how to live healthy lives and prevent NCDs in the first place. This includes having conversations with patients during their visits to the Kenshin, hosting booths at Palau's night markets where residents can speak to doctors and nurses about how to best manage their health, and getting children excited to learn about healthy living with the Kenshin mascot, Toktang the surgeonfish.
