Summary

This project brings medical care to a rural region of Haiti where quality medical care is rare. The clinic has served 2,966 patients in the past 2 years (2018 through Sept. 2019). Dr. Elizabeth Brea Ferrari, Director, has identified and treated intestinal parasites, infant malnutrition, respiratory infections, gastric maladies, accident injuries, and diabetes. The clinic has also provided over 2,037 vaccinations in support of a national vaccination campaign.

Challenge

According to the government of Haiti, the rural sector of Fondwa consists of estimated 10,000 people. Access to health care in remote rural areas of Haiti is poor and often non-existent. Before the APF Clinic began its work, residents of Fondwa were forced to travel to the nearest larger city (Leogan or Jakmel) to receive treatment, a cost out of reach for many economically poor individuals.

Solution

The APF Clinic provides assessment, treatment, and healthcare (immediately needed and preventative) to the 10,000 residents of the Fondwa Community.

Long-Term Impact

Like most rural areas of Haiti, the community of Fondwa is extremely under-served. Yet, these motivated people have organized themselves and provided for themselves for 30 years not only healthcare, but schools, infrastructure, and capacity through their peasant association, APF. Healthy residents are residents able to continue to lift themselves and their families out of extreme poverty.
