There are not barriers to help. Clean Water for an isolated rural school at more than 13400 feet

By Guillermo Doniare | Project Leader

Ths was Monica (School’s Principal)’s reaction once we confirm the beginning of the project.

“WHEN LOVE DOES NOT HAVE BORDERS, THE WORD "THANKS" BECOME INFINITE. LIVE THE FAITH AND THAT GOD BLESS YOUR SOLIDARITY AND COMMITMENT, AND CONTINUES LIGHTING THE LOABLE AND HUMBLE TASK OF THOSE WHITH A SMILE AND THEIR EXTENDED HANDS HELP OTHERS. FOR ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE FOUNDATION AND TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO WERE INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT, THANK YOU”

With great happiness and emotion we want to share that the work has been completed in the School N.365 Eduardo Calsina (Huancar, Jujuy). School attendance: 82 children. They will no longer consume water contaminated with elements so harmful to their health and development. (Arsenic and Fluor)

Rural School 365 is located at more than 4100 meters high (13450 feet), isolated (see picture “Panoramic View”); in one of the areas in the world with the largest temperatures’ amplitude (they can vary from 27  to -18 degrees Celsius between day and night / from 80F to -1F). One of the main problems daily faced by people living in Huancar is the contamination of Arsenic and Fluor in the water, as a consequence of the volcanic sediments of the area.

This work of high complexity, as much by the geographic location, access, climate and technology, included the installation of the filters necessary for the reduction of arsenic and fluor. It was integrated to a system of water tanks and electric tank to assure the complete processing of the water, to avoid its freezing and to depend on a simple and minimal system of maintenance.

The water tests performed by Official Jujuy Drinking Water Department showed excellent results, indicating that the arsenic and fluor levels are now below the maximum permitted consumption parameters. (World Health Organization)

All projects related to water consumption are the key to improving the quality of life of children because they are critical to their health, nutrition, hygiene and prevention, learning and development.

This work was made possible by many people who collaborate in different ways. From inspiration, work or donation, each one of you was important and makes it happens.

Today it is a reality  that the 82 boys who attend school 365 in Huancar (Jujuy) will no longer consume poisoned water, and feel that they have a better opportunity to grow and learn.

Special thanks to Maria Eugenia Toconas and Monica Lilian Lescano, and through them to all the rural teachers for their commitment, dedication and love for the children; Santiago Del Hoyo (Water Treatment Specialist), Marta B Azcueta, and Wilfredo Daniel Alvarez who are responsible for the implementation of this work and to make it a reality for Huancar, Jujuy.

Thank you for the willingness and commitment to all the people who help through Sumando Manos, and allow us to be the liaison between them and the underprivileged children living in remote zones. Thanks for giving them a better opportunity for the future and a better quality of life.

THANK YOU!!!!!
