In Mali, 46% of women have given birth before the age of 18. Whether these pregnancies are desired or not; adolescents lack critical access to reproductive health education. GAIA began addressing this issue when we piloted our Teen Peer Education program in 2012. The program's goal is to empower adolescents to become leaders among their peers. This program is co-ed, but our stats show that while 12% of male participants are not attending school, that number is higher, 14% for female participants. Our target age group of girls is between the ages of 14 and 18. This is a very vulnerable sector of the population much in need of this program.
What are our next steps? Interested teens will manage outreach programs in their neighborhoods!
