The devastating effect of the earthquake in Kahramanmaras province had deeply afflicted Gül and her family. Gül and her son were trapped under the rubble in their 3 storey apartment during the quake.

While she was waiting helplessly under the rubble for the first two days, a light appeared amid Gül’s despair: the voice of his son Enes. As a result of the efforts of AFAD teams, Gül was pulled out from under the rubble on the third day, however it was not possible to save her son alive.

Gül, who struggled for a long time to cope with the trauma and injuries she experienced, underwent many surgeries. While her left was amputated above the knee, she also suffered serious tissue damage in her right leg. However, she continued her treatment with determination.

With the support of the Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization(ASAM) steps were taken to rebuild Gül's life. Health educators and social workers identified Gül's needs and provided referrals for necessary health checks. Above-knee prosthesis support was provided to Gül to improve her quality of life and enable her to perform her daily activities. With this support Gül started to walk again.

After receiving her prosthetic leg, Gül expressed her feelings with the following words: "I am happy now, thanks to ASAM. I hope to be able to walk as before as soon as possible." She stated that after her painful experience, she discovered the power of holding on to life again and looking to the future with hope.

Gül's story shows the strength of a person who does not lose his resilience and hope despite the pain she experiences. Her story also serves as a reminder of how strong society can be with solidarity and support.
