Summary

The goal of the project is to build the capacity in adults (Early Childhood Development practitioners, home visitors, parents/carers) to be able to deal with issues of poverty, protection, violence and abuse, racism, and stigma in their own lives and the lives of young children. It is a non-threatening, active learning approach for adults and children about identity and diversity through story and dialogue, using the Persona Dolls.

Challenge

High levels of poverty, HIV and AIDS, gender violence, crime, child abuse and xenophobia in South Africa highlight the need for anti-discrimination and psychosocial interventions. The rape and murder of young children in mostly poor communities are on the increase. Young children are exposed to a variety of social ills and are raised in toxic communities where bullying, racism, sexism and child abuse are rife. Schools have become unsafe places for children brings its own challenges.

Solution

Attitudes towards human rights issues such as racism, gender, HIV/AIDS stigma, disability and bullying are addressed through the 'stories' that are told about each Doll's life. Inter active problem solving discussions develop based on what has happened to the Persona Doll. In this safe environment children talk about their own life experiences and their feelings, as well as 'unlearn' negative attitudes they may have picked up. The goal of the project is to build confidence in children .

Long-Term Impact

Positive behavioural changes in adults and young children. Children will understand that we are all different and that each individual's rights must be respected ad protected. 5000 people's lives will be positively changed through the project as there will be greater respect in the communities where the project will be implemented. The long-term impact will be safer communities where every individual feels respected and accepted despite race, health status or sexual preferences.
