Dear Friends ,

Since December 2024, PHASE Nepal has been implementing a Women Empowerment Project in Maila, Humla. Building on our long-standing integrated approach in health, education, and livelihoods, this project focuses on empowering women and girls in one of Nepal’s most remote regions.

Key Activities and Outcomes (Jan–June 2025)

  • Facilitator Trainings: 10 local women and 10 adolescent girls were trained as facilitators to lead empowerment sessions. Girls are now leading awareness activities on child marriage, menstrual health, and education in their communities.

“Now I speak up at school and help others understand the value of education.” – Girls’ facilitator, Tara Thapa ( name changed)

  • Women’s Literacy Classes: 100 women, previously illiterate, are now able to read and write basic sentences, recognize numbers, and understand health, hygiene, and financial matters. Literacy has built their confidence to participate in household and community decisions.

“I can write my name and read simple words—this makes me feel proud.” – Asmadevi Upadhyaya (name changed)

“Before this program, I couldn’t even write my name. Now, I read stories to my children and help them with homework. I never thought I could be this confident.” – Mautisara Khadka, (name changed) Literacy Class Participant

  • Women’s Empowerment Workshops: 114 women took part in 14-day workshops covering gender rights, financial literacy, leadership, reproductive health, and entrepreneurship. Five women’s groups are formed to continue learning and saving together.

“This program helped me find my voice and speak confidently in public.” – Anu Nepali (name changed)

  • Teacher Training: 31 teachers from 10 schools were trained in gender-sensitive teaching methods. They are now better equipped to create inclusive classrooms and reduce dropout rates among girls.
  • Mental Health Orientation: 111 women participated in mental health sessions focusing on stress management, emotional wellbeing, and self-care techniques such as breathing and mindfulness.
  • Community Engagement: School Management Committees and PTA members participated in orientation workshops to improve governance, parental involvement, and planning for school improvement.

Seasonal workloads, scattered geography, and limited learning materials created some challenges. Continued support and regular follow-up will help sustain momentum, encourage peer learning, and strengthen local ownership. We extend our heartfelt thanks to you, our GlobalGiving community, for supporting initiatives like this. Your contribution helps us ensure that young people across Nepal have a chance to grow up in healthy, safe, and supportive environments.

Warm regards,
PHASE Nepal Team
